Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and multiple sclerosis affect thousands of people and their families, causing a deterioration in many bodily functions.
Although most current treatments and diagnostic methods are based on the results obtained from biomedical research, we still need to make further progress in understanding these diseases.
A neurological tissue bank is a centre for storing the tissues required to study diseases that affect the nervous system based on a donor program. Donations are required from people with and without the disease for scientific research. Tissue banks receive the donated tissue, preserve it under the appropriate conditions for study and then make it available to scientists who are attempting to better understand these diseases.
